Help Needed in New York and New Jersey: Help Clean up and Help Restore Power

Wind. water. woe: Seawater pours into ground zero building site. Lots filled with taxis are swamped. Felled trees are dangerous. Home debris are scattered everywhere. Boats sit on train tracks. Skyscraper foundations are flooded. No restaurants to eat at. Safety is elusive in the face of a monster storm. Boats on front lawns. Breezy point lost 100 homes destroyed by fires. Storm surge sweeps homes off their foundations. Water was everywhere. Wet and barefoot, New Yorkers are wearing borrowed clothes. Floodwaters damage new york's extensive transit system which is a lifeline for many. Subway tunnels connecting manhattan and Brooklyn are swamped by floodwaters. New York subway is reeling from the devastations. Estimates of the cost range in the 70 billion.

Damaged and wrecked vehicles litter the landscape. Hurricane Katrina like sandy causes lots of havoc.

Coffee, company, chitchat, charging at electrical outlets, and Wi-Fi: Darkness has descended upon the city of lights and neons. Sandy sent newyorkers back to the Bronze Age. A city of immigrants is watching her children move from downtown to uptown. Suddenly we are not connected any longer. People are walking everywhere. Buses and subways are still shut down. Tunnels are closed and swamped.

Those with power are hosting those without power. A new divide in the city that never sleeps. Manhattan reclaims its island status. New York becomes the new metropolis that turns a few pages back to ancient history. Her residents have to learn to cope. No hot coffee. People may fight over access to electrical outlets. New york's huddled masses think of the inscription at the Statue of Liberty. They huddle to get some power and to charge their phones, iPads etc.

In the days ahead, those with power will want to offer a hot cup of coffee or tea to those without power. Patience will be needed as New Yorkers will try to catch a taxi or a bus to return to work.

Waiting on long lines may cause tensions to flair. Lack of gas and power will scare some residents, but the power companies and local authorities are doing all they can do to restore power.
